General
To understand the working principle of a smart thermostat, you first need to understand the working principle of a conventional thermostat. The thermostat uses temperature to determine when the fan and AC power needs to be turned on or heating and turning off. In fact, it works like a light switch, the difference is that it combines temperature and equations (to help determine when to turn on and off the fan, heating and cooling). A typical thermostat has a hot wire, a normal wire, a wire to the blower, and a wire to heat and cool your HVAC system.
