Ever felt like the controls on your thermostat could be pictographs? We hear your voice. Whether you have a programmable thermostat or a smart model, setting a schedule on it can cause confusion. But it's a task worth solving, and programming your thermostat can save you about $180 a year in energy costs.
While some smart thermostats can "learn" your habits and create a schedule for you after you've manually entered a few days' temperature Settings, most still require you to enter a schedule and the corresponding temperature. You just need to do this on the smartphone app, and you can do it on the thermostat itself.
Programming your thermostat can be daunting, but with a little preparation and an understanding of what's coming up, the task can be made easier. Here, we'll walk you through the programming process step by step.
Step 1: Know the schedule
First, check what rhythms your thermostat can accommodate -- daily, weekly, or weekday/weekend schedules. A daily (or seven-day) schedule lets you program a different schedule for each day of the week, and a weekly schedule uses the same schedule for seven days of the week.
Weekday/weekend schedule (5/2 or 5/1/1) allows you to set one schedule for weekdays and another for weekends (5/1/1 the thermostat allows you to set different schedules for Saturday and Sunday). Most programmable thermostats use a daily or weekday/weekend schedule, and almost all smart thermostats provide a daily schedule.
Once you know your thermostat usage schedule, you can write down the time your family usually wakes up, leaves the house returns home and goes to bed each week so that you can easily program the thermostat when you are ready.
Step 2: Select the temperature Settings
Keep the hand mat handy, as you will then need to write down the ideal temperature for different times of the day. On your thermostat, these temperature setpoints are usually designated as "home," "away," and "sleep."
To determine the temperature and maximize energy savings, follow the U.S. Department of Energy's guidelines: Set the "leave" and "sleep" Settings 7 to 10 degrees lower or higher than the "home" Settings, depending on the time of year. It decreases in the colder months and increases in the warmer months.
Step 3: Set up a schedule in the thermostat
Now, with your family's schedule and a temperature set point at hand, you can program your thermostat. If you use a weekly schedule, you only need to enter the 24-hour time and temperature information once. You need to do this twice for weekday/weekend schedules (three times for 5/1/1 models) and seven times for daily schedules.
For programmable models, check the thermostat's user manual to learn how to build features using a schedule. (If you no longer have the manual, please search online by manufacturer and model number.)
First, select the day of the week, and then enter the time you want the first day to start and the temperature or set value for that time period. Then, set the next cycle, and so on, until the end of the day (some models allow you to copy the calendar from one day to another). For example, one day might include "home" set at 68 degrees at 6:30 a.m., "go away" set at 60 degrees at 9 a.m., and another day where "home" is set at 6:30 a.m. and 24℃ at 5 p.m., and the last "sleep" is set at 10 p.m. with 24℃.
If you have a smart thermostat, its app's timeline generator will walk you through similar steps to program it on a smartphone.
Step 4: Enable the schedule
Now for the easy part: Activate the plan. Whether you are using a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat, you will need a button to open the schedule you entered. If there is no button to enable a schedule, check the thermostat's display to see if it says "hold." If so, press the reserve button to unreserve the current setting so that the new schedule can take over.
With your thermostat set up correctly, you can start saving energy and money.
