ON/OFF control is the basic type of control in a control loop. With On/Off controlled thermostat, the internal sensor senses the controlled medium and sends a signal back to the controller, that is, the thermostat which processes the signal. When the ambient temperature sensed is less than the controller’ set-point, the thermostat will send a signal to valve to the position of fully open until the set-point is achieved. Once the set-point is achieved, the thermostat will send a signal to the valve to the position of fully closed.

The example is when the sensor of the modulating system senses a deviation from the set-point, the thermostat/controller will calculate the amount of the error to determine what signal should be sent to the actuator. For instant, the error is 5 volt deviated from the set-point 10 volt, then a half opened signal will be sent to the actuator, or 8 volt deviated from the set-point 10 volt, then fully opened signal will be sent. The popular modulating control signals include 4~20 ma and 0~10 volts. Compared with ON/OFF controlled thermostat, modulation thermostat is more sensitive for temperature control.
